Odisha Train Accident: At least 288 people were officially declared dead and over 1,000 injured after a passenger train went off the tracks and hit another in Odisha's Balasore on Friday night.

1. After taking stock of the Odisha train crash from ground zero, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday lauded all the people who are providing assistance in the relief operation.

2. In a tweet, PM Modi said, "Took stock of the situation at the site of the tragedy in Odisha. Words can't capture my deep sorrow. We stand committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected. I laud all those working round the clock, on the ground, and helping out in relief work."

3. According to Indian Railways, a total of 288 people lost their lives in the accident on Friday.

4. As the rescue operations are underway, many opposition leaders have demanded the resignation of Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
5. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) on Saturday asked airlines to monitor and take necessary action in case of any abnormal surge in airfares to and from Bhubaneswar in view of the train accident in the state.
